Amy Toruño’s Play Receives Kennedy Center’s Latinx Playwriting Award
Temporary, referring to temporary protected status, is based on Toruño’s mother’s crossing to America and her work for over two decades in this country. Toruño wrote about the family connections in her dedication:
For all the Nicaraguan immigrants who have helped lift this country. Our voices have not been heard and they are done being ignored.
Thank you to the wonderful educators who never give up on me. My incredibly supportive family and friends who are my biggest fans. And my mother and grandmother, for allowing me to tell our story.
This is The American Dream
My mother’s story
My grandmother’s story
My story
And after all the years without “papers”
It WILL go down on paper.
