The General Development Fund supports scholarships, research, and departmental programs. This unrestricted fund gives the greatest flexibility in meeting the Department of Theatre’s most pressing needs.

Many promising applicants and continuing students have financial need, especially those from traditionally underrepresented groups in the theatre profession. This fund supports students who would otherwise be denied access to the full educational opportunities of Illinois Theatre.

In 2022, professor of Acting and Theatre Studies, Tom Mitchell, retired after thirty-nine years of service. In his career with Illinois Theatre, Tom was interim department head twice, a regular member of the department advisory committee, and most recently head of acting. His work here has touched thousands of students and faculty. We are very pleased to honor Tom with a scholarship fund in his name that will help us recognize and extend that legacy in the next generation of students. The fund will provide undergraduate scholarships for theatre majors.

This fund, named for Professor Emeritus Dr. Robin McFarquhar, awards a scholarship for further training or certification and an engraved sword to a graduating BFA or MFA acting student with a focus in stage combat.

This fund, named in memory of Professor Latrelle Bright, supports scholarships for undergraduate students in the Illinois Theatre acting program with financial need. Preference is given to students that would contribute to the diversity of the student body.
