Stage management professors Cindy Kocher and Amber Schultz took the MFA stage managers to New York City as part of their course on commercial theatre. Students toured Hudson Scenic Shop, which built sets for the Hamilton tours, and the Eric Winterling Costume Shop for a demonstration of the gorgeous breakaway costume from Frozen. Students met with Alexander Dodge (Scenic Designer for Anastasia and Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder), Christopher Taggart (Company Manager for Carousel), Rick Sordelet (Fight Director for 50+ Broadway shows), Chris Wilenta (IATSE Stagehand), Lauren Hirsch (Child Guardian for Frozen), and AKA NYC, a Broadway Entertainment Marketing Agency.
Students also met nearly a dozen stage managers, including Kinky Boots SM Glynn Turner, who offered a backstage tour after the performance, and the entire stage management team from Once on this Island during a Q&A after the show. The students’ trip was partially supported by scholarships from the Wilbur B. Menefee Scholarship Fund.
